Advancing Women’s Empowerment in Nuclear Security: A Report on CIPS-NUST’s Participation in the CRDF Fellowship Workshop in Vienna

The Centre for International Peace & Security (CIPS) at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) proudly announces the successful completion of the CRDF Fellowship Project 2024 by Dr. Rubina Waseem, Assistant Professor at CIPS, and Ms. Haleema Sadia, PhD scholar at NUST. This highly competitive fellowship, supported by Global Affairs Canada’s (GAC) Weapons Threat Reduction Program (WTRP), focused on empowering women in nuclear security, marking an inspiring milestone for CIPS-NUST.

As representatives of Pakistan, Dr. Rubina Waseem and Ms. Haleema Sadia participated in an international capstone workshop in Vienna, Austria, where they engaged with global experts, shared insights from their research, and contributed to discussions on best practices in nuclear security and nonproliferation. During their time in Vienna, they had the distinguished opportunity to   visit the United Nations headquarters and tour the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) laboratories, presenting NUST’s research initiatives on the global stage. These engagements facilitated in-depth exchanges on nuclear security advancements and allowed them to highlight NUST’s contributions toward a secure and peaceful world.

The fellowship not only provided Dr. Waseem and Ms. Sadia with invaluable skills through advanced training sessions but also equipped them with resources and insights that they are now bringing back to CIPS. By applying these learnings to projects at NUST, they are poised to share knowledge with their academic community and contribute further to strengthening nuclear security in Pakistan. Their participation exemplifies the importance of inclusive leadership in nuclear security, particularly for women, and underscores NUST’s commitment to global peace and security.

This achievement highlights NUST’s dedication to advancing research, policy engagement, and leadership development in nuclear security. CIPS-NUST continues to support critical initiatives that strengthen Pakistan’s role in global security, demonstrating the university’s vision for a more peaceful, collaborative international community.
