Description

The United Nations Pre-Deployment Training Course – 42 (UNPDTC-42) was held at the Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS) from 16 to 27 June 2025. This course is fundamental training for all peacekeeping personnel, equipping them with the essential knowledge required to operate effectively in UN peacekeeping missions. Its primary objective is to adopt a shared understanding of UN peacekeeping’s core principles, procedures, and policies. The course covers critical themes and priorities, including conduct and discipline, sexual exploitation and abuse, the protection of civilians, human rights, gender mainstreaming, conflict-related sexual violence, child protection, and environmental protection.

Participants

The course was attended by 26 personnel of the Pakistan Army, including 6 lady officers.

Conduct Methodology

The course was designed to prepare peacekeeping personnel for their roles in assisting the host countries in their pursuit of peace. It covered basic UN functioning and specialized assignments through modules like Core Pre-deployment Training Material (CPTM), which focused on UN systems, legal frameworks, and specific subjects. Also, the adjunct Faculty presentations provided insights from UN partners. Scenario-based exercises enhanced participants’ responses to diverse situations, fostering readiness for UN security and cultural environments.

Closing Ceremony

Associate Dean Dr. Muhammad Makki delivered the closing remarks for the United Nations Pre-Deployment Training Course – 42 (UNPDTC-42). He congratulated the participants on successfully completing the course and noted that the training at CIPS closely mirrors the diversity and operational realities of actual UN missions. Dr. Makki highlighted that the Department of Peace Operations Training, over its short history, has covered impressive ground by organizing 218 courses and training over 4,177 peacekeepers in line with UN policies and guidelines. He further underscored Pakistan’s longstanding and meaningful contributions to UN peacekeeping, emphasizing its position as one of the leading Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs). He also recognized Pakistan’s pivotal role in global peace efforts, consistently deploying soldiers, police officers, diplomats, civil servants, and relief workers to conflict-affected areas under the UN flag. In his concluding remarks, he expressed confidence that the course would serve as a key milestone in broadening the participants’ understanding of UN systems and preparing them for roles in complex, multidimensional peacekeeping missions. He extended his best wishes to all participants for continued professional success.
