Description

The United Nations Engagement Platoon (UNEP-03) course was conducted from 9 to 27 December 2024 as per the United Nations Reinforcement Training Package (RTP) concerning the recently launched engagement platoon. The objective was to cultivate meaningful involvement with gender in conflicted communities and advocate for integrating individuals at all levels and roles within peacekeeping missions to achieve long-term, sustainable peace.

Objective

The primary objective of the UNEP-03 course was to enhance the operational readiness of peacekeepers by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and behavioral competencies required to effectively serve as members of the United Nations Engagement Platoon. This included fostering gender-sensitive approaches, strengthening community engagement capacities, and promoting inclusive peacekeeping practices aligned with UN standards and mandates.

Participation Overview

15 personnel from the security forces successfully completed the course and were awarded certificates.

Conduct Methodology

The course was designed to equip peacekeepers with the essential knowledge needed to carry out tasks effectively in UN missions. Participants were exposed to the various facets of their roles and tasks as part of ET.  Additionally, they received enlightening presentations from Adjunct Faculty to gain insights from subject matter experts (SME). Participants also got in mission training through Seminars and hands-on learning through extensive Scenario-Based/Tabletop Exercises, ensuring a well-rounded and experiential educational environment.

Closing Ceremony

The course concluded with a formal closing ceremony on December 27, 2024. During the event, Dr. Makki, Associate Dean CIPS, expressed pleasure in addressing the participants of the UN Engagement Platoon Course (UNEPC-03). He commended the diversity of training at the Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS), which mirrors the United Nations’ inclusivity. Highlighting the short but impactful three-week course duration, he noted how it successfully provided a near-real UN office environment. He applauded the achievements of the Department of Peacekeeping Training, which organized 208 courses and trained over 4,019 peacekeepers according to UN policies and guidelines. He also emphasized CIPS’s institutional partnership with leading regional and international peacekeeping training institutions, underscoring its global relevance. Recognizing Pakistan’s pivotal contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, he praised the nation’s consistent provision of troops, police officers, diplomats, civil servants, and relief workers under the UN flag, earning Pakistan the distinction of being among the world’s leading Troop Contributing Countries (TCC). Congratulating the graduates of UNEPC-03, Dr. Makki expressed confidence that the course would serve as a milestone in shaping their understanding of the UN system and their future roles as Engagement Platoon members. He concluded by extending his best wishes for their professional endeavors in peacekeeping.
