This course provides foundational training for all peacekeeping personnel, equipping them with the essential knowledge needed to operate effectively in UN peacekeeping missions. Its primary objective is to adopt a shared understanding of UN peacekeeping’s core principles, procedures, and policies. The course covers critical themes and priorities, including conduct and discipline, sexual exploitation and abuse, the protection of civilians, human rights, gender mainstreaming, conflict-related sexual violence, child protection, and environmental protection.
Participants
The course was attended by 11 personnel from the Pakistan Army.
Conduct Methodology
The course was designed to prepare peacekeeping personnel for their roles in assisting the host countries in their pursuit of peace. It covered basic UN functioning and specialized assignments through modules like Core Pre-deployment Training Material (CPTM), which focused on UN systems, legal frameworks, and specific subjects. Also, the adjunct Faculty presentations provided insights from UN partners. Scenario-based exercises enhanced participants’ responses to diverse situations, fostering readiness for UN security and cultural environments.
Closing Ceremony
Dr. Muhammad Makki, Associate Dean CIPS, delivered the closing remarks following the completion of the certificate distribution ceremony. He expressed his pleasure at addressing the participants and congratulated them on the successful completion of the course. He highlighted that the training at the Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS) reflects the diversity of the United Nations and, despite its short duration of two weeks, provides a near-real UN office environment. He further emphasized that the Department of Peace Operations Training (DPOT) has made significant progress in a short span, having organized 227 courses and trained over 4,354 peacekeepers in accordance with UN policies and guidelines. He further noted that CIPS remains in sync and maintains institutional partnerships with leading regional and international peacekeeping training institutions.
He underscored Pakistan’s meaningful role in United Nations peacekeeping missions, highlighting its consistent contributions of soldiers, police officers, diplomats, civil servants, and relief workers in conflict areas under the UN flag. He also appreciated that Pakistan holds the distinction of being among the leading Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs), with its commitment to international peace widely acknowledged. Dr. Makki congratulated the graduates of UNPDTC-44 and expressed confidence that the course would serve as an important milestone in enhancing the participants’ understanding of UN systems and preparing them for their future roles, particularly as members of an Engagement Platoon. He extended his best wishes to all participants for their future professional pursuits.
